Takis Tloupas: A Photographic Itinerary on Mount Athos, 1969 Bilingual

Description

On Mt Athos I took photos initially of objects and later on of people. I particularly liked the stone masonry and the schist slab roofs. I also liked the iron railings should in no way be seen as implying exclusion or need for protection. I took them precisely because I liked them as objects. There must have been very fine craftsmen on Mt. Athos. On my third trip, I met Father Philippos, a blacksmith monk who used to go from monastery to monastery doing the odd job. I made a portrait of him and it turned out a very powerful one. I also like the portrait I made of Father Avakum at Megisti Lavra. H was one of those people who go to Mt. Athos to attain holiness. That's not the case with all monks.
