Alice Scourby
Dr. Alice Scourby was Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropolgy at Long Island University. She is author of Third Generation Greek Americans:
A study of Religious Attitudes, and co-editor of Greek American Community in Transition. She also published The Greek Americans, the first comprehensive book on the subject written by a woman, is described in the prestigious journal of “Contemporary Sociology” as a concise and readable book which takes its place as an indispensable source on Greeks in North America.
In 1974 she was a Board Member at the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Queens College, City University of New York, and as a faculty member she developed a course and taught “The Greek American Community.” She was Founder of “The Greek American Women’s Network” and served as its first president 1990-95.
She received a Commendation at City Hall, City of New York for “a distinguished record of achievement as an educator, author and lecturer, and for her support, reinforcement and empathy on gender issues, as well as, her dedication to preserving and promoting Greek heritage and culture.” On her retirement, she was awarded the honor of “Professor Emeritus of Sociology” by Long Island University.
